George has Meningitis

— Meningitis is no monkey business!

We do like firsts in our Association and "George Has Meningitis" is no different, This is the title of a book produced by MAS that was the first of its kind to be published thanks to the help of funders Glasgow City Council.

It took almost 10 years to find an author willing to take on the writing of the book, no one seemed brave enough until Eileen McKiernan managed to coax Jenny Lee to take on the task and a wonderful job she has made of it.

George is one of a collection of books written by Jenny in the Dr. Spot Casebook series, the aim of which is to have the children read the story of George the baby gorilla either themselves or with a family member at home, in offices, doctors' surgeries and waiting rooms everywhere.

Hopefully readers will take on board the signs and symptoms of the disease without really realising they are doing so.This may just save a life.

George was on show at the Edinburgh Book Festival and was also featured in the Glasgow Evening Times. The paper then hosted workshops in the Mitchell Library and had school children come along to find out more. Dr. Spot was on hand together with author Jenny Lee and illustrator Woody who were in turn accompanied by doctors and scientists from some of our Glasgow laboratories.

The children had a ball, talking and drawing all kinds of bugs, but they learned a great deal about bacteria and how to identify meningitis symptoms.
